Landforms Part 1
The longest landform in the Southeast is the Coastal Plain. The Coastal Plain has flat land with low elevation. The Coastal Plain is 200 miles wide, and it is along the Gulf of Mexico. It is also 100 miles wide along the Atlantic. The Coastal Plain has wetlands such as swamps and marshes. The rest of the land that is not a wetland is used for farming because it has fertile and soil.
The Piedmont Plateau is another landform of the Southeast. The Piedmont Plateau has rugged land. It is 125 miles wide. The word Piedmont in the word Piedmont Plateau means at the foot of the mountains. The Piedmont Plateau is also good for farming cotton, tobacco, and other crops. It also has bad areas with bad topsoil. These areas have forests, pastures, and orchards.
The Appalachian Mountains are also in the Southeast. The Appalachian Mountains divide the rivers that empty into the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico. The Blue Ridge Mountains is the main range that makes up the Appalachian Mountains. There are also the Cumberland Mountains and they are a part of the Appalachian Mountains system, and are also in eastern Tennessee and Kentucky. This area is also commonly called the Cumberland Plateau. These mountains have a lot of coal that is mined. Also the Appalachian Mountains are not good for farming. They are covered with very dense, crowded, and thick forests. Narrow valleys that are between mountains are some orchards or meadows. The Allegheny Mountains are also in the Southeast. You can find them in West Virginia and Virginia.
